The main objective of International Mother Language Day is to preserve the culture and traditional knowledge. According to the UNESCO website, International Mother Language Day has been celebrated all over the world since the year 2000.
Language is such a tool that connects people to each other and reflects their culture. There can be many languages in a country. There are 122 such languages in India whose number of speakers is more than 10000, the same 29 languages which are spoken by 10 lakh people. International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21 February to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide to bring awareness to many mother languages.
History and Significance of International Mother Language Day 2023
UNESCO announced to celebrate February 21 as International Mother Language Day in the year 1999, it was started by Bangladesh, and later year 2000, it started being celebrated all over the world.
In 1947, when Pakistan was separated from India, it was geographically divided into two parts: East Pakistan and West Pakistan. Pakistan declared the Urdu language as the mother tongue of the country, but due to the presence of the Bangla language in East Pakistan, they chose Bengali as their own language. Started struggling to make their mother tongue, after this East Pakistan became Bangladesh and his message was completed on 21 February, the anniversary of Bangladesh started being celebrated on this day.
40% of the world’s population does not have access to education in the language that they speak or understand, so to commit to understanding the importance of the mother tongue, UNESCO declares to celebrate Mother Language Day. India has many languages in the country itself. There are more than 121 languages spoken by 10000 or more people in India which shows the importance of promoting mother languages in national relations. International Mother Language Day is celebrated to promote the world’s different mother languages, understand the importance of multilingualism, and preserve them.
