Somvati Amavasya 2023: Amavasya reading on Monday is called Somvati Amavasya, it comes only once or twice a year, this Amavasya has a very special significance in Hinduism.
Married women fast on this day for the long life of their husbands. In the scriptures, it has been given the name of ‘Ashwattha Pradakshinavrit’, “Ashwattha” means Peepal tree. On this day married, women worship the Peepal tree with milk, water, flowers, Akshat, sandalwood, etc.
Bathing in holy rivers is also considered to be of special importance on this day. It is believed that in the Mahabharata, Bhishma explained the importance of this day to Yudhishthira and told that by bathing in holy rivers on this day, a man becomes prosperous, healthy, and free from all sorrows. It is also believed that by donating, the souls of the forefathers also get peace.

All the gods reside in the Peepal tree. Starting from the day of Somvati Amavasya, the person who circumambulates on all Amavasya days, his happiness and good fortune increase.

Somvati Amavasya 2023
If you cannot do this circumambulation on every new moon day, then you worship Lord Gauri Ganesh by circumambulating 108 objects on the new moon day that is studied on Monday, they get unbroken good fortune. It is believed that all the deities reside in the Peepal tree, so offering a lot of black sesame flowers in water on the Peepal tree in the morning on Saturday and lighting a mustard oil lamp in the
evening, Shiva Chalisa, Hanuman Chalisa By reciting Shani Chalisa, all the closed doors of man’s happiness and prosperity start opening slowly by themselves.
Law of Somvati Amavasya
On the first day of Somvati Amavasya, a parikrama is performed by offering betel leaves, turmeric, vermilion, and betel nut to the peepal tree.
After this, on Somvati Amavasya, according to one’s choice, offering of fruits, sweets, wedding accessories, food items, etc. is performed and circumambulation is done.
How To Please The Ancestors
If there is pitta dosha in the horoscope, then go to any pilgrimage place on Somvati Amavasya and perform Ketu rituals for the ancestors, as well as feed the needy after the worship, donate utensils, etc. on this day, if you feed a cow and a dog. If you get it done then the ancestors will be happy.
Don’t hurt any living being on this day. It is good to offer Argh to the moon on this day, apart from this, donate things related to Shani like black shoes, black urad, an umbrella, mustard oil, etc.
On this new moon day, milk mixed with black sesame seeds and water should be offered on the Peepal tree, as well as circumambulating the Peepal tree, which reduces Pitra Dosha.
Along with this, on Somvati Amavasya, green fodder is offered to the cow and flour tablets to the fish. Water is provided for other animals.

What things should be donated on the day of Amavasya
- Silver is related to the moon. According to Hindu belief, ancestors are pleased by donating items made of silver.
- According to Garuda Purana, on Somvati Amavasya, people are happy to donate other items including dhoti gammccaha.
- According to astrological belief, it is beneficial to donate white-colored things such as milk, rice, etc., especially related to forgiveness, to please the ancestors.
- According to the scriptures, a land donation is also considered auspicious to please the ancestors.
