Prevention and controlling cancer

Cancer is the second most common cause of mortality with nearly 1 in 6 deaths worldwide. Modeled projections show that of the six WHO regions, the Region’s cancer burden will expand at the fastest rate by 2030. Most cancer cases in the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region are discovered late when treatments are incompetent and patients have worse outcomes. The Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) is an associated web-based platform that provides statistics on cancer prevalence around the world to help with cancer prevention and research. The platform focuses on the awareness of cancer indicators using information from the Cancer Surveillance Branch of the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), including GLOBOCAN, International Incidence of Childhood Cancer (IICC), Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), and various cancer survival benchmarking projects (SurvCan and SURVMARK).

What is cancer?

Cancer is a disease in which some parts of body cells grow uncontrollably and these body cells spread into other body parts. Cancer can start in almost any ware of the body. Human cells grow and multiply through a process called cell division to form new cells as their body needs. New cells grow they get damaged, they get old and they die and new cells take their places.

Sometimes these cells’ growth process brake down, abnormal or damaged cells grow, and these cells grow and multiply when they shouldn’t. This abnormal growth is known as a tumor. Tumor types.

Most of the tumor’s forms are solid, but cancer of the blood knowns as leukemias generally does not.
Tumors can be cancerous or non-cancerous.

How does cancer develop?

Cancer is a genetic disease. It is caused by changes to genes that are controlled by the function of the body and how the body cells grow and divide.

Genetic changes that cause cancer can happen due to errors that occur during cell division and also damage to DNA caused by harmful substances in the environment, such as the chemicals in tobacco unhealthy and junk meals, and UV rays from the sun.

They were also inherited from our parents.
Most cancers are treatable if they were detected in the early stages.

Prevention

Doctors have identified several ways to lower the risk of cancer. Awareness is the key.
The more people are aware of the disease, the more preventable it becomes. Smoking, drinking, excessive sun exposure, a sedentary lifestyle, and more importantly, awareness about one’s own body are paramount in preventing the disease to creep into your body.

It’s important to talk with your doctor about which cancer screening tests are best for you based on your own risk factors.
